Wehmut – lieder by Schumann, Komitas, Mahler

WEHMUT

SEDA AMIR-KARAYAN; ALTO
GÖTZ PAYER, PIANO

In her debut on compact disc, the exceptionally gifted singer Seda Amir-Karayan brings together German Romantic music and songs from her native Armenia, uniting the two streams to extraordinary effect. Recorded in collaboration with pianist Götz Payer, she presents a stirring foray into apparently contrasting musical traditions that also turn out to have much in common. A wonderful listening experience!

Artists

Seda Amir-Karayan

Seda Amir-Karayan was born in Yerevan, Armenia, and began her studies at the Komitas State Conservatory where she took jazz vocal and musicology. She is one of the best known performers of Robert Amirkhanyan’s songs – a status reflected not only in numerous international concerts but also in the CD “The Voice of Armenia”. In addition, she performed Armenian sacral music as a soloist with the Geghard Ensemble. She went on to study vocal performance, specialising in oratorios and Lieder, with Professor Ulrike Sonntag at Stuttgart University of Music. During her studies, she won first prize in the “Podium Junger Gesangssolisten”, a competition for young vocal soloists, in Zwickau. She was also awarded a “Deutschlandstipendiuim” scholarship, part of a programme for particularly talented students, for the academic year 2014/15.
Today, Seda Amir-Karayan is a highly sought-after alto. Her most important recent experiences as a singer include performances at the Berliner Philharmonie, Kölner Philharmonie (Cologne), Konzerthaus Berlin, Liederhalle Stuttgart, Freiburg’s Konzerthaus, Musikfest Stuttgart and the Rheingau Musikfestival. She also featured in the first-ever recording of Isfried Kayser’s “Alma Redemptoris Mater” for solo alto, performing with Ars Antiqua Austria, conducted by Jürgen Essl (a Carus/SWR 2 project). Other prestigious conductors with whom she works include Helmuth Rilling, Hannes Reich, Hans-Christoph Rademann, Enoch zu Guttenberg, Kay Johannsen, Achim Zimmermann, Denis Rouger, Etta Hilsberg and Horst Meinardus.
